La Bolivie, un des pays au plus bas PNB des Amériques, traverse une grave crise économique. Sur les Hauts Plateaux, où est concentrée plus de 70 % de la population, la fermeture des mines métalliques et la surexploitation de terres pauvres sous un climat rude rendent de plus en plus précaire le quotidien des habitants. Leur seul choix est l'émigration vers les terres basses tropicales sous-peuplées. Arrivés, ils sont alors victimes d'une pathologie tropicale qui ne leur est pas familière et risque de décourager les efforts d'implantation. Parmi les affections redoutées des colons les leishmanioses, objet de ce livre. Sous l'impulsion de François Le Pont et Philippe Desjeux, l'équipe de l'Institut Bolivien de Biologie d'Altitude s'est livrée à une véritable exploration épidémiologique du piémont andin et de l'Amazonie bolivienne. Cet ouvrage se voudrait une synthèse pour un public élargi d'une trentaine d'articles parus dans des revues spécialisées. L'un d'entre eux a valu aux auteurs l'attribution du prix Broden-Rhodain délivré par la Société belge de Médecine tropicale en 1991. Bolivia, which has one of the lowest gross national products in the Americas, is suffering a severe economic crisis. On the high plateaux the closure of mines and the over-cultivation of poor soils in a harsh climate make the daily life of the people increasingly precarious. Their only alternative is migration to the under-populated tropical lowlands. When they get there, they fall prey to tropical diseases they are unfamiliar with, which can discourage their attempts to settle. One of the diseases feared by these colonists is leismaniasis, the subject of this book. Encouraged by François Le Pont and Philippe Desjeux, the team of the Bolivian Institute of Altitude Biology has conducted a veritable epidemiological exploration of the Andean foothills and the Bolivian Amazon. The book summarises for a wide audience some thirty articles that have appeared in specialised journals. One of them earned its authors the Broden-Rhodain prize from the Belgian Society of Tropical Medicine in 1991.
